iD#5 Manresa | Cal Gras
Art and Propaganda. Do It Yourself strategies and practices.
Workshop by Democracia in collaboration with Eva Soto.

Topics
• Agitation and propaganda in an age of media monopolies.
• Public art, successes and failures from the counter-monument to work with communities.
• Taking the stage. “Do it yourself” (punk). Faced with contemporary art as propaganda of cultural policies, thinking art as communicative action. Strategies and tactics for intervening critically in public spaces.

IDENSITAT, in collaboration with Ajuntament de Manresa and Cal Gras initiated an open call for participation in the workshop ART AND PROPAGANDA. DO IT YOURSELF STRATEGIES AND PRACTICES carried out by DEMOCRACIA in collaboration with EVA SOTO.

Date and venue
July 2010
Place: Avinyó. Alberg de cultura Cal Gras. C. Francesc Macià, 1, 08279 Avinyó (Barcelona)

The workshop
When Chuck D, the vocalist of the hip-hop band declared “We’re media hijackers” or “rap is black CNN”, it was very easy to relate his words to the theories of Antonio Gramsci on the subject of “counter hegemony”. In fact, when Chuck D added that “he who controls culture controls the people”, he was merely summarising Gramsci’s starting point: the ruling classes’ power over the proletariat and all subjugated classes in a capitalist production system is not just the result of control by the State’s repressive apparatus. This power is essentially the result of the cultural “hegemony” which the ruling classes manage to exercise over subjugated classes, through control of the education system and media.
If a counter hegemony implied the creation of a force capable of transforming subjective consciousnesses and of fostering intellectual and moral reform, raising the issue of certain conflicts in civil society, seeking to generate discursive moments which could, taken together - however alternative or sporadic they might be – lead to a discourse which challenges apparently indestructible cornerstones of the dominant system, then we might say that Public enemy’s praxis is none other than this.
Today, the desire to agitate and attract publicity characteristic of avant-garde movements has been continued through new forms associated with popular culture and the “do-it-yourself” ideology proposed by the punk movement.

iD#5 MANRESA. Call for ideas for a project of intervention in the public space.
IDENSITAT#5 Manresa opens an open call for projects to participate in the program of interventions in public space that will take place in April 2010 in differents places in the city of Manresa.
The open call is for artists residing in Central Catalonia who want to develop an intervention project in the public space of Manresa. The participants will have to make a proposal that incorporates Idensitat’s Touring Device and propose one or several places in the city for its display. There are no prerequisites apart from these mentioned above, hence the projects can provide answers or raise questions, identify conflicts or propose strategies for dialogue, camouflage in the space or occupy it, involve people in the work process or search for spectators; at any rate, the strategy and formalization will have to deal with elements of latent tension in public space. The final location of the selected proposal in the public space will be subject to obtaining a municipal permit.
The selected project will be part of iD#5 Manresa, along with the following artists and collectives:
Domènec, Democracia, Basurama, Patrick Raddatz, Traces of Autism (Jozua Zaagman, Maartje Dros, Jacqueline Schoemaker) and Oriol Fontdevila/Laia Ramos.

Touring Device. At different moments in 2009 the Touring Device has been part of workshops and seminars as an itinerant exhibition that conveys specific activities generated by Idensitat. It has been present in Calaf (Hivernacle Cultural), Prat de Llobregat (Torre Muntadas) and Barcelona (La Capella). It pursues the idea of an exhibition that expands in the territory and serves as a transmitter - receiver of data. Its itinerant nature allows to affect specific aspects of the territory through mobility. In this case it is proposed as a display element that is part of the selected project. It may be modified and adapted to the needs of the project. The selected project will have 2.100 eur, of which € 600 as honoraries and the remainder for production (including taxes). The Touring Device has some additional elements such as projector, various tables, chairs, projection screens and vertical supports. The displacement of the device will be included in the project.
The proposals may be sent by e-mail to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or by mail to Centro Cultural el Casino, paseo Pere III, 27 bajos. 08242 Manresa till March 18, 2010.   Download rules pdf

The Other Side of the Fabric is a project by Rogelio López Cuenca that was presented on December 17 in Can Palauet (Mataró). It is part of the collaboration between Can Xalant and IDENSITAT. Both share an interest in providing support to artistic projects thought up specifically fot the city of Mataró. It is also the result of the work group formed by Roser Caminal, Ismael Cabezudo, Laura Marte, Cecilia Postiglioni, Daniela Ortiz y Anna Recasens. Project site: www.mapademataro.net

Time past and time future
What might have been and what has been
Point to one end, which is always present.
T.S. Eliot: Four Quartets

MAPA DE MATARÓ is part of the project EL REVÉS DE LA TRAMA (THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FABRIC), conceived during the workshop Alternative Defeats: Now/here Mataró (Can Xalant, September - October, 2008). A  work group arising from this meeting and comprising Roser Caminal, Ismael Cabezudo, Laura Marte, Cecilia Postiglioni, Daniela Ortiz and Anna Recasens, has been working with Rogelio Lopez Cuenca in a research concerning the definition of a "different" geography of the city, by means of  tracing  itineraries which can allow us to cross  local history in several ways to visualize simultaneously aspects normally considered in isolation, classified and frozen in time, enclosed in specific spaces; a crisscross vision departing precisely from unplanned geographies of everyday life, and relating them with global processes in which these are both consequence and protagonists.
A conclusion, summarizing everything, reveals a repressive presence of what is “not said” and this lack of saying implies an emptiness covering what is really said.

TELECALAFFFFF WORKSHOP
Recipes for an internet television

On the 6th, 7th and 13th of November,  TELECALAFFFFF workshop developed recipes to cook up an internet television channel. This workshop was directed by Horitzó Tv and consisted in demonstrating available open source tools on the internet to edit images and video, composing audio, making animations, and finding multiple solutions to problems arising when creating and distributing audiovisual contents by  internet.

The participants in the workshop aimed to start their own channel. Currently  a group of neighbours in Calaf wish to start "TeleCalaf", a television station for everyone on town who has something to show and say.  Calaf  had a local television channel some years ago. This workshop retrieved the spirit that made it possible, and , why not,  retrieved some of the programmes broadcast years before. The workshop has already generated a first attempt: http://www.livestream.com/calaftv

Topografia Sensible. Activitats educatives d’Idensitat.

Last Sunday 20th of September the first exploration and botanical walk around the town of Calaf occurred. Starting at the Plaça Gran of Calaf, the group followed the Camí del Rentador through the Mas de l'Indiano and to return along the railway border to finish the walk in the Convent of Sant Francesc. This itinerary is included in the program proposed by Sensitive Topography

Topografia Sensible is a project created by Anna Recasens and Mercè Ramos for Calaf and part of the Educational Action of Idensitat #5- HivernacleCultural.

HIVERNACLE CULTURAL is a project by Josep-Maria Martín for Idensitat that proposes the construction, in Calaf, of a cultural centre, a space of knowledge, experimentation, learning, debate, information, cultural and scientific exposition where nature is the central axis.

One of the goals of Idensitat is to promote educational actions linked to those projects forming part of this fifth edition. In this way Sensitive Topography is generating a catalogue and a botanical map of the municipal term, acquiring knowledge and memory related with local flora. Currently the project is promoting a series of open, interactive and educational activities related with art, nature and the recovery of the environment.

As a part of these activities, last Saturday 19 September the project was present at the Market of Calaf with a stall covering different functions, including information point, library and of center of data collection. Advice, stories, recipes, etc., were exchanged. The stall will continue on a monthly basis. In the next months several activities will be carried out such as itineraries, readings and collective work sessions open to participation. The information on this educational actions may be consulted in the project blog www.idensitat.net/topografiasensible.

This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or directly on activity days.

For four days, Calaf will have its own television channel. Come and give your opinions, sing, curse, speak, dance, cook, discuss! Plató Volant offers exciting programming including Farcellets (documentaries and archive material), Broxetes i Brioxos (the freshest live broadcast), and not forgetting the coolest videomix of the Solstice, the Day of Music.

You can see us in http://horitzo.tv or come to Ca l'Escloper of the Plaça dels Arbres! From Thursday, the 25th until Sunday, the 28th of June, 2009

There's a universe inside and outside you

Interventions of Walter Gam in Calaf

From the beginning of June to the 15 of July, the Brazilian artist Walter Gam, From Belo Horizonte made a stay in Calaf as part of Idensitat 5. During these days developed several actions that included a joint work with pupils of primary consistent to creating some flags to be placed in the 5 points of access to the village. Another of his actions was the distribution, in the urban space of Calaf, of different messages inviting to the reflection. Apart from these participative actions Walter Gam carried out a set of videos of short duration highlighting the characteristics of the place, which describe his perception of the village: the marinada, places... On finishing his stay was offered a public presentation of his work, sharing table and tasting products of the zone.

Knowing another place. Knowing Calaf.

To bring limits, spaces, changes, persons into relationship ... to recognise the different universes which occupy the same space through acts which they inscribe on its life and its landscape. 30 flags created by children of 6 to 10 years of age, to represent their imaginary spaces , wave at 5 points marking different entries to and exits from Calaf. In the town a series of messages are mixed with the everyday landscape, creating symbolic spaces. Finally a transformed space will offer a meal, a relational space where anyone may approach and enjoy conversation and food, as well as many different aspects of the work developed by Walter Gam during his stay in Calaf.

TOOLKIT. LUL (LANDSCAPE URBANISM LABS)

[Sigal Barnir, Yael Moria Klain, Adi Gura, Yael Caron, Assaf Evron]

As a laboratory, the LUL team investigates ways, modes, and attitudes of living. We are a multi-faceted organization, comprised of artists, landscape architects and curators. LUL questions contemporary urban issues through varied actions, including exhibitions, original projects and cooperative ventures in urban communities. LUL's attitude is founded in sustainability and cooperation between planners, artists, residents and local municipalities. LUL translates the Toolkit anew with each project. Coming from outside of the local context, the design for a specific project in a specific location occurs only follows familiarity with the location’s social, cultural and physical topography. The project "Translating Landscapes" centres on the effects and realities of immigration (and migration) both to and from Europe. The project focuses on the sensation of home, in direct relation to collective and individual memories of landscape and notions of territory. "Translating Landscapes" creates an outdoor space that presents the relationship between the two landscapes. Together with the local community, LUL creates a platform on which diverse cultures may cohabit.

Plató Volant a project of Horitzó.tv for iD#5_Calaf.

During the week from May 18 to May 23, Horitzó.tv completed the previous part of its project Plató Volant, developed in Calaf for IDENSITAT. Between next June 22 and 28 it will be broadcast live.

HivernacleCultural. Temporary Gardens for Calaf

The artist Josep Maria Martín has been working on a project for Calaf since last December. He has made thirty or so interviews of people living or working in Calaf who bring content, criterion and specific data to the intended development of the project. This project is synthesised as a greenhouse, relating culture to landscape. Through the construction of a series of temporary gardens that will change the appearance of different demolition sites around the village, currently empty due to construction work being delayed until better circumstances arise.

Advantage could be taken of this temporary situation to generate green spaces, which could, for the time being, significantly alter the urban landscape and the inhabitants self-esteem as well. Included within Josep Maria Martín's work process, a debate took place last Saturday 18 April to which those people who had participated in the previous interviews were invited. During the debate, the full meaning of this initiative was shown, an initiative which would allow Calaf to pioneer a project that relates participation in, and reflection upon, the construction of temporary public spaces.

For some years, Josep-Maria Martín's artistic projects have focused upon the creation from art of new strategies of intervention in specific structures of society. With a subjective, self-questioning will, he questions and criticizes the reality in which he decides to work. His pieces emphasise the ideas of process, research, participation, involvement and negotiation, turning those agents chosen for each project into true generators of a common project.

Josep-Maria Martín's artistic projects, being multidisciplinary processes, lend themselves to interpretation through each discipline of those agents participating in the works. For example: for the artist, they are pieces of contemporary art, for an architect, they are architectural projects, for a social worker, they are community projects, for a politician, they are projects about social policies of negotiation, housing, immigration, etc. By his method of work Josep M Martin involves many other people. In this case HivernacleCultural becomes a device to gather collective involvement and which in the future may become a research space where culture and landscape can be the fundamental axes.

Next June in Calaf, a workshop will take place with Josep Maria Martín in collaboration with Jean Nicola Fauchille and some of the participants in the phase of debates. The workshop is open to all those Calafins who wish to participate, and will count with high school students from the IES Alexandre de Riquer and students of different degree courses in the areas of design, architecture, art, cultural management or anthropology, attending from different universities.

iD Barri_Calaf This workshop is the first part of iD Barri, a project linked to IDENSITAT#5 that explores the idea of neighborhood through the relation between art, social creativity and transformation of the environment. Like previous activities in this workshop iD Barri_Calaf a seminar will take place in October this year. To carry out this workshop as well as the seminar, the council of Calaf and Idensitat have succeeded in becoming part of the programme ARTWORK'09 of the Regional Government of Barcelona, subsidized by the programme of Innovative Projects and sponsored for the Service of Employment of Catalonia and cofunded for the European Social Background|. This program has been granted to 11 towns of the province of Barcelona notable for their involvement in contemporary art. Calaf with Idensitat is part of this select group of towns.

Project Traces of Autism. Calaf - Manresa.

From 23rd till 29th of April, as part of the project Traces of Autism an inventory of public space in Manresa and Calaf was made. The artists (Jozua Zaagman, Maartje Dros and Jacqueline Schoemaker) see public space as uncontrolled space, space of transgression, space of need. The artists drew a grid of north – south lines, 200 meters apart, on the topographical maps of Calaf and Manresa and set out to walk the closest possible route along the straight lines.

By following this objective spatial course, they avoided the distraction of (a pre-knowledge of) highlights, points of interest or promising alternative lines. They tried to walk without preconception and without expectations, staying as closely as possible to the lines on their grid, to the position of the idiot, the ignorant.

“For us, walking is not a metaphor for something else. It is the physical experience of the long, non-comfortable walks itself that constitutes the map. We continually cross boundaries by not following the socio-economic routes of an urban environment but walking a meaningless line instead. We are also continually exposed to the limits of controlled and uncontrolled space by walking”.

The grid allows the artists to make an objective inventory of public space. As they walked along the lines, they noted traces and indicators of controlled space (for example, cash machines, cameras, garbage containers, development signs, tourist walking route sings) and uncontrolled space or informal uses of space (for example, illegal waste, handwritten texts, brothels, call shops and places for informal money transfer). Together, these different spots on the grid will show the particular urban infrastructures of Calaf and Manresa. They will return in autumn to make a work from the data they collected.
