ABOUT CIUTAT IL·LUSTRADA

Ciutat Il·lustrada is an Idensitat programme combining art, collective creation, and community engagement, generating illustrated narratives (oral, textual, and graphic) with local people and organisations, addressing issues and themes of local interest. Ciutat Il·lustrada is rooted in artistic experimentation within specific contexts, fostering dialogue among institutional spaces, creative practices, and local initiatives.

The current project, Ciutat Il·lustrada | Raval (2024–2026), focuses upon the connections among children, young people, and public space, initiating a dialogue with participating organisations, and addressing issues such as the right to the city, sustainability, and diversity. Using a multi-stage participatory process, the aim is to create an educational resource in the form of a game to revitalise public spaces and strengthen community ties.

This project builds upon the previous Ciutat Il·lustrada Bon Pastor (2022–2023), and the Camins Il·lustrats Vilanova i la Geltrú (2019) projects.

 METHODOLOGY

The Ciutat Il·lustrada methodology combines exploration, storytelling, and processes of implementation to create learning environments.

‘Exploring’ refers to the process of getting to know and engaging with various neighbourhood groups, generating narratives based upon their day-to-day activities, establishing a dialogue with which the project is contextualised within the local area.

“Narrating” involves the process of synthesising the elements gathered during the exploratory phase and generating a collectively designed narrative, together with the working groups and the participating organisations. The aim is to design a tangible form for this (in this case, a publication or a game).

“Materialising” means constructing and giving form to all the materials gathered, as a socialisable artistic production, of the kind that involves direct participation to give shape to ideas, experiences, or inventions.

“Public presentation” or socialisation, sharing the final result with the organisations involved and all the neighbourhood, transforming public space into a place of confluence.

 PROCESS

Ciutat Il·lustrada | Raval is currently in the development phase. So far, we have laid the foundations for collaboration with community and social spaces in the neighbourhood, such as the Biblioteca Sant Pau Santa Creu, Impulsem, Fundació Tot Raval, La Traginera, Xamfrà, Servei de Dinamització de l’Espai Públic, Taula de Dinamització de la Gardunya, el Casal d’Infants or Kn60Lab.

Visits and meetings with each of the partner organisations have enabled us to begin thinking together about how to contextualise the project, how to address the complexity of the context when gathering narratives, and how to consider the artistic development of proposals.
