SILENCED ~ REACTIVATED
An Idensitat exhibition, with projects by Claudio Beorchia, Wei Yang, Sally Maclachlan - Eva Joy, and students from the Universitat Popular de Benicarló photography course .

SILENCED~REACTIVATED brings together artistic projects which took place in Alicante, Valencia, and Benicarló, within the Transversal Aesthetics residencies programme, conceived by Idensitat in collaboration with the Consorci de Museus de la Comunitat Valenciana. The exhibition includes artworks from between 2023-2024 based upon the relationship/ tension/ interdependence between the concepts of Silenced ~ Reactivated. The artworks emphasise the idea contained in the symbol (~), identifying spaces and situations which are in a transitional phase between the silenced and the reactivated.
The exhibition includes the artworks “Shell Talk”, by Sally Maclachlan and Eva Joy, created during their residency at the Centro Cultural Las Cigarreras in Alicante; “Wandering Landscape”, by Wei Yang, from his residency at the Centre del Carme Cultura Contemporánea de València; and “Còm sonen aquests llocs?” by Claudio Beorchia created during his residency at the Museu de la Ciutat de Benicarló. The exhibition also includes the mediation project “Registro de Arquitecturas Populares”, a collaboration between the Universitat Popular de Benicarló photography group with Idensitat. These projects have identified locations, spaces, or situations which are in a transitional phase between the silenced and the reactivated. These projects also, through the idea expressed with the symbol ~, had set in motion a suite of practices around investigation, creation, and mediation promoting activity, and making evident a movement or transience from the silenced to the reactivated, and even vice versa; movements and variations, in many cases ephemeral, but capable of modifying, questioning, or making rigid structures more flexible.
SILENCED ~ REACTIVATED
While the concept of the silenced refers to a condition of invisibility, disconnection, isolation, the concept of the reactivated leads us to the beginning of a new vitality that happens after a process of interruption, disconnection or lethargy. When we relate these circumstantial conditions to certain spaces, we may argue that there is a process of transience or temporality that defines the very vitality of spaces, which pass from one state to another through intermittent cycles, sometimes redundant and sometimes random. No place or situation can survive permanently silenced, nor constantly reactivated. No place can be both silenced and reactivated. Silence is also recollection, introspection, reflection, while activation may be understood as the impossibility of stopping, of growing, of doing, of disconnecting, of not intervening.
When silence is due to imposition, the need for reactivation becomes immediately apparent, in the same way that when a state is established in which it is impossible to escape over-activation, the desire for seclusion, for silence, arises, understood in this case as an activist positioning, or a transformative stance. Both silence and reactivation are states which can, and which usually do, combine, and it is in this constant flux that the possibilities either of inhabiting spaces differently, or of experiencing the rhythms of motion between silence and reactivation, become apparent. We define this in-between place with the symbol ～, as something which stands between two stages which from the start are posited on the basis of a certain incompatibility, as well as a clear interdependence.

Transversal Aesthetics is a programme for research and experimentation conceived and developed by Idensitat on the intersection between art, mediation, and social space. A place of confluence between artistic practices as a vehicle for critical research; mediation activities as a vehicle for the production of content, interaction and learning transfer; and the urban context as a vehicle for connecting specific themes of work to a specific active social space relevant to these themes.
Since 2018, Idensitat ,in collaboration with the Consorci de Museus de la Comunitat Valenciana, has held four editions in the Valencian Community, with a similar methodological structure, each dealing with a specific theme such as leisure, fiction, the relationship between community and immunity, and the one presented in the current exhibition, the connection between the silenced and the reactivated. All of these themes have acted as triggers for several artistic projects in their respective editions.
