Description:
Haring, at that time an internationally acclaimed artist who had started spraying graffiti in the subways of New York, was not paid for this 34 metre painting: a statement against AIDS which was already wreaking worldwide havoc. He only asked for his choice of venue: in the Plaça Salvador Segui, in Barcelona’s Barrio Chino. The wall and the painting remained standing until the wear and tear of humanity and climate, and an intense architectural renovation of Barcelona in the nineties, swept it away. Luckily, before it disappeared, in December 1992 –after complaints from such admirers of the artist as Nazario or Vincente Bernat– the Barcelona City Council, in agreement with the Keith Haring Foundation, arranged for a 1:1 scale image of the painting to be traced. 25 years later, it was reproduced in Joan Coromines Square, next to the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA), which has preserved the tracing, along with colour samples.
