IDENSITAT is an arts project investigating ways of impacting upon the public sphere through creative proposals related to place and territory in their spatial, temporal and social dimensions.

Since its beginning in 1999, IDENSITAT has been in continuous transformation to become a complex system, incorporating other projects, actions or interventions, promoting processes, organising exhibitions, publishing ... altogether deploying a variety of creative strategies to realise an activity or a set of activities. A system based on collaborative dynamics in order to build a relationship between contemporary artistic practices and social space, through research, production, education in a particular context, and distribution throughout a wider context.

Under the rubric of, "to experiment with a location to transform artistic practices, and to experiment with artistic practices to transform a location", IDENSITAT highlights the active role which art plays in social context.

IDENSITAT collaborates with a number of artists and creators in various fields, bringing them together with individuals or collectives working in local contxt. Idensitat offers an itinerant production space, with dynamic travelling projects, generating visions, analyses and proposals for transformation.

BACKGROUND RESUME

ID #1. IDENSITAT was initiated in Calaf in 1999 as a project which intervened in public space, by using proposals from creators in different disciplines. Beginning with an international public call, projects were selected which were capable of impacting upon social dynamics, and which carried forward investigations and experiments from previous fieldwork, understanding creation as a work process connected to a particular space, and a specific context, which advances proposed mechanisms of involvement in the social sphere.
This first programme went by the name of Art Públic Calaf, and was developed in the town of Calaf between 1999 and 2000. It is considered to be Idensitat's first programme.

ID #2. The second edition of IDENSITAT (from here onwards, this set of activities adopted the name IDENSITAT) was developed between Calaf i Barcelona from 2001-2002. It was centred upon the relationships between the concepts of identity, density, place and community, with projects and activities developed between both locations. The mechanism used previously, an open international call and specifically commissioned projects, was maintained in following programmes. The concept of connections was introduced, incorporating research and projects from other cities, in order to widen the set of activities, and to strengthen the programme of debates, exhibitions and the publication of texts on the relationship between art and other disciplines. The participation/representation dichotomy with reference to the city was a major catalyst for these activities, and the main subject of this edition was critical intervention and social interaction in public space.

ID #3. The city of Manresa was incorporated into the third edition, between 2004 and 2006, which emphasised the concept of “territory”. Both Calaf and Manresa, despite being only 25 kilometres apart, show a marked variation in character, as much in their landscape as in their social density and complexity. On this occasion the subjects of growth and urban expansion were proposed as main themes for projects and activities. The close proximity of the two towns allowed aspects of urban transformation to be examined, coinciding with the last gasp of a construction bonanza, which prefigured an ongoing scenario of city building, and a desire on the part of most municipalities for progressive expansion. At that moment, the concept of educational action was incorporated, to define a set of activities mediating the relationship between project producers and other local collectives. In this edition IDENSITAT defined a programme for generating creative practices and investigating new forms of involvement and participation in social space.

ID #4. In the fourth edition between 2007 and 2008 , on the subject "home-away", the network of participation was strengthened and extended with the development of projects in Calaf, Manresa, and the city of Mataró, in collaboration with Can Xalant Centre de Pensament i Creació contemporania, and the region of Priorat, with the Priorat Centre d'Art. The option arose to develop a continuous action in collaboration with local collectives or institutions, or to develop one-off proposals for interventions in public space. The subject of home-away permitted projects to be conceptualised at two speeds, long and short term, alternating between two devices: one based upon process and the other upon ephemeral action. IDENSITAT evolved into an observatory of territory and a laboratory of projects.

ID #5, the fifth edition of the project, took place between the end of 2008 and 2010. Taken together the definitions highlighted in each previous edition were necessary ingredients in obtaining a living project, mechanically complex, but aspiring to synthesise specific messages, a stimulus for creators to participate in processes resulting in microcontexts. Whereas in previous editions working themes were proposed, the methodology rehearsed by IDENSITAT became synthesised within the initials ID.

ID is Identity | Density, a synthesis which initially gave its name to the project, but which could also mean Investigate | Develop - Invent | Discover - Involve | Denounce - I Interrogate | Discuss - Innovation | Decrease, among other multiple combinations of terms.

ID alludes to IDENSITAT's transformation, at that time, into a platform for permanent performance and production of projects, as well as proposing more intentional actions of communication and knowledge transfer, around the lines of debate established both by Idensitat as a whole, and by the various participating projects.

From this point the nodes of ID's network extended, connecting to different contexts in order to collaborate in such activities as the production of projects, outreach and experimentation with different audiences. With this idea of networking, based upon temporary and concrete questions and a desire to discover synergies throughout the network , Idensitat made an ongoing effort to identify points of connection with various contemporary artistic initiatives.

ID#6 The sixth edition of Idensitat between 2010 and 2012 was observed through various projects with a given subject in a specific location (e.g. ID Sports ); or through open-ended projects related to the concept of neighbourhood, comprising educational actions in public spaces, as well as mechanisms, such as itinerant devices, which raise awareness of certain local issues (e.g. ID Barrio ); or through projects of cooperation, collaboration and/or co-production, made possible through residencies and multidisciplinary and site-specific projects (e.g. Transversal Aesthetics).

The proposals forming part of ID # 6 strengthened Idensitat in a transveral ambit, approaching artistic practice as the generator of a permeable system, a space of convergence, action, reflection and collaboration, in which culture actively affects social context, providing a test-bed for Idensitat to experiment with creative strategies for transforming social space, generating new economic and politic models.

ID # 6 was when Idensitat entered a period of maturity, broadening in its own terms, evolving into a critical tool while developing its capacity for production and content creation; defining itself by creating contexts in which the connection between citizens and artistic practice, through dynamics of collective work, established meaningful nodes in the active construction of the commons.

ID # 7 began at the end of 2012. From ID # 6 onwards, the biennial open call was abandoned, in order to follow a line of purposeful continuity, expressed as:

proposals dealing with a specific subject-area, deployed in a specific location; proposals dealing with the theme of community; cooperative and co-produced projects. Taking an interest in open source processes, IDENSITAT aims to develop shared experiences through practices of self-management, by creating tools and tactics which underpin the construction of creative projects impacting upon social context, and a visual environment which encourages educational situations and relationships.

Starting with micro-projects and autonomy of resources, but with an expanded perspective regarding the site of action and the temporary space, IDENSITAT establishes spaces of reciprocity, and projects in the medium- to long-term, in order to construct relationships before, during and after a project. This generates the appropriate pace between action and involvement for an effective continuity.

ID # 7 has begun with an award for work done so far, with the continuation and reinforcement of working contexts in specific neighbourhoods and networks, and with the launch of several international proposals.

With the idea of developing content on subjects related to Idensitat since its inception, new sections are being created for the Idensitat website with a full archive of texts, articles and information. The Idensitat team is also working on creating a publication which will open up a space for reflection on art, contemporary culture and current policies from a critical perspective.
