iD #5 The fifth edition of IDENSITAT will be developed between the end of 2008 and beginning of 2010.

iD is Identity | Density, a synthesis that initially gave its name to the project, but which could also mean Investigate | Develop - Invent | Discover - Involve | Denounce - Interrogate | Discuss - Innovation | Decrease among other multiple combinations of terms.

In November 2008, iD#5 opened an international call for entries, directed to creators with proposals in the sphere of public space; creators who have a crossdisciplinary perspective and who wish to interact using a variety of strategies in the social space of the contexts involved. These are Calaf, Manresa, and particularly in this edition El Prat de Llobregat. The Calaf Town Hall has been involved with IDENSITAT since its beginning in 1999 and the Manresa Town Hall joined the project in 2004. Both town halls constitute the main field for IDENSITAT`s activities. The Prat de Llobregat Town Hall was incorporated in iD#5 with a specific project or artistic intervention on the water reservoir of the Plaça de Catalunya in el Prat de Llobregat. ID #5 Prat de Llobregat is part of the Observatori El Prat de Llobregat Project.

The open call for entries had two categories, production projects and documentation projects. Other shared projects and parallel activities are also realized in Mataró, in collaboration with Can Xalant, in the region of Priorat, in collaboration with Priorat Centre d`Art, in Sondika, in collaboration with Consonni, and in Barcelona in collaboration with la Capella.

Between November 2008 and Enero 2009, IDENSITAT received 310 projects from different countries, involving more than 500 people, since many were group projects. Following are the countries that had a significant presence, in descending order: Spain, United States of America, Germany, Italy, Argentina, France and the United Kingdom. iD#5 also received projects from Israel, Netherlands, Chile, Mexico, Canada, Portugal, Belgium, The Czech Republic, Ireland, Austria, Sweden, Hungary, Japan, Colombia, Uruguay, Ukraine, Puerto Rico, Scotland, Croatia and Panama. The selection of 19 projects, plus the 4 invited add up to 23 projects to be developed during iD#5. The artists for the invited projects are: Josep-Maria Martín, Democracia, Rogelio López Cuenca, and La Más bella for Calaf, Manresa, Mataro and Priorat.

A selection committee, formed by six specialists in creative fields related to the public space, was in charge for the selection of the proposals that would be developed in Calaf and Manresa. The committee met in Calaf, from January 30 to February 1, 2009, and observed the quality of the proposals, which in majority brought creative and experimental solutions to the proposed framework.

The selection committee was formed by:

Francesca Comisso. Independent curator, member of the a.titolo collective and professor in the Politécnico de Turín. Iris Dressler and Hans D. Christ. Directors of WKV Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart. Daniel García Andújar. Artist Ramón Parramon. Artist and director of IDENSITAT. Martí Peran. Independent curator and professor in the Universitat de Barcelona.

ID #5 SPECIFIC GUIDELINES FOR PRODUCTION PROJECTS IN PRAT DE LLOBREGAT

The Town Council of Prat de Llobregat joins ID #5 for a specific project of artistic intervention in the water reservoir of the Catalonya Plaza in Prat de Llobregat. ID #5 Prat de Llobregat is part of the Observatori El Prat project. The following document gives information about the place and the specific object subject to intervention. It also states the specific guidelines that complete the general ID #5 guidelines.

ID #5 Prat de Llobregat. Context / Object of intervention

The municipality, at present, is witnessing a process of significant urban changes: these transformations, however, respect the conservation of the environmental values of Llobregat delta’s fragile territory.
In fact, sustainability has been a main concern during the amplification of the airport, the deflection of the river, the installation of the desalinator and water purifier, the construction of the metro and high speed train lines, as well as the urban amplification of North and South Prat. In this context, the remodelling of the Catalonya Plaza –in the centre of the city- with the creation of a commercial axis, a large public space and a cultural centre, is a symbol of economic, social and cultural development.
The Depósito de Agua (water reservoir), next to the Cultural Centre, is one of the most emblematic elements of the city, since the city is established on a delta and water is highly valued. Moreover, the water reservoir is present in the collective imagination of the citizens, and it has been part of the municipality’s skyline since many years.
The water reservoir of Catalonya Plaza was constructed in 1966. It was supposed to provide potable water to the city (it augmented the capacity of storing water and regulated the pressure of the distribution network). Presently, the water reservoir regulates water pressure, since Prat is a delta, thus flat.
It is a reinforced concrete construction of 38 meters. Tall columns support an octagonal floor, with inverted edges, which has a capacity of 350 m³. A circular balcony, with a metallic balustrade, is the link between the two volumes. It is the work of the engineer José Luis García, in collaboration with the municipality engineer Eladio de Ceano-Vivas. [Download detailed plans in pdf].
Since 2001, the water reservoir is part of the Special Plan and Catalogue for the protection of Historic Patrimony elements (architectural and environmental).

It will also be part of the Catalunya Plaza Cultural Centre, the new cultural entity of the city, which will host the Municipal Library, the Municipal Archive, an Auditorium, as well as an exhibition hall, study rooms, a café-restaurant and a shop. The water reservoir is located in the projected garden of the Cultural Centre.
It is in this context that a possibility of a project and the realization of an artistic intervention on this emblematic architectural element is considered.

ID #5 / Call for projects (2008 November-2009 January)

ID opens an international call for projects directed to creators with proposals in the sphere of public space; creators who have a crossdisciplinary perspective and who wish to interact using a variety of strategies in the social space of the contexts involved . These are Calaf and Manresa.
ID #5
will also stage parallel activities in Mataró (Can Xalant), Priorat (Priorat Centre d'Art), Prat de Llobregat. Through this open call proposals will be put forward for projects in the above mentioned locations. The open call for projects has two categories which relate to the different approaches that IDENSITAT considers to develop:

Production projects

Public spaces as well as public domain are concepts for discussion and in continuous updating. ID is an open laboratory for investigating these aspects and the projects are understood to be research works in this area. Therefore, ID calls for projects that intervene in public space and seek for interaction among different social sectors; projects that outline contemporary strategies for creation, incorporating specific aspects of the context, and/or which display actions of communication in their environment. Projects are invited based on their medium or long term working processes. Others are projects that intervene in a more specific or ephemeral way while using the infrastructures, means or existing mechanisms in the territory. These projects must facilitate answers or renew questions, detect conflicts or propose strategies of negotiation, in short, to accelerate or mitigate the permanent tension in public space.
The open call for production projects concerns the cities of Calaf and Manresa. This edition in particular incorporates a project in Prat de Llobregat. The project will intervene in a specific space that the Town Hall plans to develop (For more specific information regarding each site please refer to www.idensitat.net).

Documentation-archive projects

ID also calls for projects carried out in other contexts, in progress, unfinished or considered for publication, as well as theoretical works from parties interested in participating in IDENSITAT as a mechanism for diffusion and analysis of projects. This will be done through a specialized publishing work aimed at disseminating projects that impact upon public space. The specific publication will take the format of a book, articulating a set of projects and theoretical essays.

All projects selected for publication will form part of an archive or pool of projects which may be reproduced or adapted to new contexts. IDENSITAT may propose displaying a number of these projects as a production.

Another important aspect of IDENSITAT is the display of projects which promote educational actions. This does not constitute a specific category since it will draw from the two proposed categories. It refers to projects or partial aspects of projects which may be developed in a medium-short period and rehearse forms of shared production through workshops or other dynamics based on exchange of knowledge. Preferably, these projects will be developed with local organizations and educational centres. It might be a matter of extending processes from projects under present development in other contexts, or even specific and partial activities of a project of production. From within its own organisation, IDENSITAT will encourage and develop more in-depth projects following this line.

Complementary information related to the call for projects ID #5

In relation with the ID #5 open call for projects, the Calaf Town Council has exposed a series of projects that will be realized in the near future. This information could be taken into consideration for all proposals for production projects, if the need for a specific space is observed. It can also be used for proposals that will project on an already existing project of the municipality.
In case a proposal is submitted for one of those spaces, IDENSITAT will follow the initial elaboration and definition of the project. The final construction will depend on the agreement and budget previously settled on between the Town Council of Calaf and the author or group of authors of the project.
