Loreto Varela, Isaac Gimeno

This proposal is based in the relationship of El Prat to the delta of the river Llobregat. An intervention is planned both at the tower (water tank) and at the garden sited at its ground. The water tower, apart from its main function of gathering and distributing water into the locality, is part of the modern imaginary and also of the city's heritage, a witness to the recent past and a reference to the future.

The base of the tower is the area where the new cultural center of El Prat will be built, becoming a space of meeting, participation, learning and leisure for citizens and a place to rest from the city's fast pace.

"Jardi de fang" seeks to reinvent, from its original function as water tank, the image of the tower as an urban milestone, recovering for the city some of its identity, lost among the current changes in its configuration.

Two interventions are considered within the proposal:

"Jardi de fang" will be an intervention staged at the base of the water tower, where lack of identity and memory will be suggested by the image of a land cracked by draught. Nevertheless, just as the land can be brought back to life, memory and identity also can be restored.

"The tower observatory" will be an intervention at the top of the tower, offering a panorama around El Prat, as well as the installation of a reflecting surface, that like a mirror will cause reflections, and extend the vision of the tower, and so expressing a possible future vision of recovery of the community's memory and identity.

This project proposes to visualise the technical and scientific apparatus regulating the human ecosystem of el Prat, and to consider its relationship with the citizens. The water reservoir tower, because of its formal characteristics and its physical location, would be suitable for the reception of data. The artists suggest that providing the public with access to technical information, along with adequate means to interpret them, could generate public debate. They will therefore give out information on a daily basis and observe the reactions of the administration, technicians and residents. The project proposes four levels of analysis (urban, social, technological and administrative) that would allow the artists to study opportunities to generate new relationships between them. Exchanging data and information will be the basic mechanism used for the first phase of the project.

RADIOMENSIÓ | Radio Instalación Experimental en el Prat

The project proposes an artistic intervention at the old water tower of Prat de Llobregat, converting it into a communications antennae light and visible for all residents of the city. The artists intend to install a booth at the foot of the tower, which will be used as a space for an online experimental radio station. The visual transformation of the tower is the aesthetic preamble to the social aspect of the project.

The artists are considering converting one of the builder's containers of the new cultural centre’s into the office of Radiomensió (experimental and participative radio-installation in Prat), a prototype of an online radio that will broadcast programs related to the different collectives and residents of Prat. Through a first phase of investigation, the artists will look for mechanisms for the production of programs made by and for the different collectives of El Prat. The space will also be used to host workshops for El Prat’s schools.
